Luther Village Newsletter --- Winter 2011
Megan's Musings
Oh the weather outside is frightful! Looking outside my window thinking about something to write for this newsletter all I can think about is how cold it is... how nice it would be to be sitting on the beach with the sun hitting my face, listening to the sounds of people talking in the back ground, kids splashing in the clear lake, enjoying Luther Village and all we have to offer.

During the Christmas season I always seem to think about my family. Since moving to Winnipeg 6 years ago I have been adopted into many families as my family is in Kenora. I now have 9 “nieces” and 2 “nephews” who are not blood related. Where did I meet my adopted families??? LUTHER VILLAGE! We always talk about how Luther Village is a big family and community who look out for each other. I can’t imagine my life without Luther Village as I would not have these “families” in my life. Luther Village is a great place to meet others who believe in the same things you do, for your children to grow and learn life skills that they cannot learn from a computer or a video game, to experience God in the outdoors and to potentially meet people who will change your life forever.

We have many great programs for children, youth, young adults & families. Watch for our 2012 brochure and maybe think of giving the gift of camping for your kids or come as a family this year. Be thankful this Christmas season for your families no matter how they are made up. Come out to Luther Village this summer and be a part of our family! Merry Christmas!

See you at the beach!

What They're Saying

Camper Mom Quote:
“Just wanted to let you know how much our son enjoyed his stay at your camp last summer. This was his first “overnight” camp and he had a great time. We’ll be letting all his friends and their parents know about [Luther Village]...”

Alumni Quote:
“I think you can especially see the mission statement at Luther Village when people are off “work time” but they go out of their way to hang out with campers, or talk to them, or just say Hi...just because they want to. I always see people from all the staff groups doing this.

I try to stay involved in these kinds of things like talent night or camp games, just to improve the experience for the campers; especially the ones that might be more shy. Sometimes I just try to listen to the campers, if they have interesting stories or just would enjoy someone to talk to or someone to laugh at their jokes.”                                                                                                                                         - Cam Loeb, 2007, 2008

In Mission with Others

You may wonder what happens to leftover food items that we have at camp at the end of the season...??? Whatever is leftover – things like cereal, bread, meat, mustard, margarine, vegetables and fruit, dressings, ketchup, syrups and other things that cannot be saved over the winter – have been taken into Winnipeg to Trinity Food Pantry for them to distribute to families and to use for meals they host.

Recently we received a thank you letter and here’s what they said:

Dear Kim,
The Trinity Food Pantry thanks you for your support of our mission. We gather monthly over two days, usually a Monday and Tuesday, to assemble food, pack and distribute hampers and serve a meal for 50 client families. The donated food was put to good use. For example, the cereals were repackaged for the client families. And, the sausages were used by Secret Place which also does ministry out of Trinity. ...Thanks again for your support

Don Engel, Board, Trinity Food Pantry

It is great to be able to work together in mission with others!

Luther Village Fund Update
Thanks to all who donate to this ongoing fund, administered by the Winnipeg Foundation! With the amount raised, in the 5-1 matching category (that is, for every $5 we raise, the Winnipeg Foundation gives us $1) for 2011, we received a matching grant of $5,974.69.
LV Fund Anyone donating to the Luther Village Fund can share their story in the Luther Village Fund Book.

The Luther Village Fund is an endowment fund began in 2010. It is an accumulation of financial gifts which will generate interest income to be disbursed towards worthy projects and causes at Luther Village. The Luther Village Fund exists to encourage lasting contributions from individuals and organizations which will support the camp by funding capital projects, enhancing programming and providing financial assistance through camperships.
• Only interest income generated from the Luther Village Fund will be spent, the principal will always remain intact so that the Luther Village Fund will do good things at Luther Village forever
• The Luther Village Fund will exclusively support 3 key areas: capital projects, enhancing programming and financial assistance through camperships. Interest income will never be spent on general operations.
• The Winnipeg Foundation will manage the endowment fund on behalf of Luther Village. This means The Winnipeg Foundation will be responsible for receiving donations, purchasing, selling and holding investments within the Luther Village Fund, making available fund related information to Luther Village and distributing interest income.

If you would like more information or to donate to this fund, please see our website: www.luthervillage.ca or call the office at 204.783.3337 or after April 25 at 807.543.4052. Thank you!
